ADHD Parent Coaching

"You cannot stop the waves. But you can learn to surf."

You may be here because you suspect that your child is wired-differently, or they were newly diagnosed with ADHD, and you aren't sure of where to start. Or, perhaps they have had a diagnosis for years, but you feel like you're lacking tools to parent effectively and compassionately. As your Certified ADHD Parent Coach, I'll teach you what you need to know about ADHD and brain functioning. We'll discuss the executive functions and how lagging development in these areas are causing your child's everyday difficulties. I'll provide in-depth information about medical and non-medical interventions and how to tell which ones are right for your child. Most importantly, you'll learn how to parent your child in a way that is proactive, collaborative, and developmentally appropriate.

Q: Why should we try parent coaching? Isn't my child the one who needs to learn new skills?

Chances are, your child is already doing the best they can. That's because it's always preferable to do well! Children don't want the adults around them to be frustrated or unhappy any more than they want to be struggling themselves. Since it's a child's lagging executive functions that are making things hard for them, it's up to the adults to be the change they want to see in their child, while at the same time, teaching them how to collaborate and be a part of the solutions to the unmet expectations they are faced with every day.

Q: We've tried everything! Sticker charts, time-outs, and nothing helps! How is this different?

The ADHD brain seeks immediate gratification, so stickers or treats might work for a short time until the novelty wears off. But, collaborative, proactive, and developmentally appropriate solutions can truly solve your family's problems, regardless of your child's age or diagnosis, with the benefits of helping to build connections and improve positive communication.
